This is so good! I'm currently reading A Praying Life by Paul E. Miller and he is doing a great job of tackling all our predisposed notions and naming what we all feel about prayer in a refreshing, down-to-earth way. Recommend!
LOVE Keller's book on prayer and LOVE using that exercise of personally praying through the Lord's Prayer. I find a little structure to my prayers so helpful for my distractible mind. Wanted to also recommend Donald Whitney's book Praying the Bible. It talks about praying God's words back to him in personal, relevant ways. It's beautiful, and I do it often now. What a great way to start the year, Deidre! And PS bravo to you on stepping into paid subscriptions; your work offers such value.
Sarah—thank you so much for the book recommendation. I wrote it down in my little book of ALL THE BOOKS I WANT TO READ. Can't wait to check it out. Your description of it reminds me of a study by Ruth Chou Simons I did last year, called "Truthfilled." And thanks for the encouragement about stepping into paid subscriptions. That means a lot.
My prayers have been all about me dealing with the fact that half my family is in heaven and I am here swirling around in my thoughts. I usually wait until bedtime and thank him for another great and glorious day and I fall asleep.

Oh, keep the recommendations coming! I've never read Paul Miller before. I am really, really excited about checking him out. Thanks Caroline!
So beautifully said, Deidre. The poem had me captivated!
The verse that keeps me praying is: “”Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.“ -Romans 12:12
Oooh Bethy, that's a good one, and also so difficult sometimes (especially patient in tribulation, yikes!).
The poem 😍 stirred my heart. I’d love to have a chat about more of what you’re learning soon--maybe in your hot tub under the stars some night?! 😉
EEK I would love to. Hot tub under the stars seems like the perfect place to do that. Text incoming!

Nancy, that's hard. Man, being human is not easy, is it? Especially when we love so deeply. Love you ❤️
