This was really good, and I love how you took it beyond just the joie de vivre of hosting dinner parties (which I share!) into a discussion of covenantal relationships.

God always chooses covenantal expressions of relationship with His people, and we should be willing to do the same with each other.

Yes. As I was researching and digging into my Bible to write this piece, I found myself just being in awe of God, and his willingness to be in covenant relationship with us. What they say is true… he really does love us. Also, I’m glad you share the joie de vivre of hosting dinner parties, because that makes for fun conversation. Do you have a go-to menu?

If it's up to me it's BBQ haha - and we usually do some kangaroo steaks. But my wife is the better cook tbh

Kangaroo steaks! That is not what I was expecting to hear and I’m delighted to discover this.

I really enjoyed reading this piece! Our church did a recent sermon series about this very idea. One of our goals this year has been to have people over for dinner at least once a month. While it hasn't worked out every month, the times that it has have been so cherished and precious.

I want to come over for dinner!

Reading this reminded me that remembering happens at the table also. It's the place Jesus invites us to do this in remembrance of Him. 🤎

You are so right. The table is interwoven with remembrance.

(And yes. Come to Maine and come over for dinner. You’re always welcome here.)

Loved this Deidre! There's the whimsy side of dinner parties and then there's the deep - you stirred both in me, thank you 💛 (and also - I don't think that whimsy's not deep too!)

Mmm. The intersection of whimsy and deep—that’s what dinner parties seem to invite! Yes!

"There is something about sharing bread that appeals to almost everybody; perhaps it is hardwired in us, written into the bone. Break bread with me, and share my strange and uneasy grief and be my people when my people are gone." This is one of my favorite lines in one of my favorite cookbooks (Midnight Chicken, Ella Risbridger). There is something holy in the vary ordinary act of eating together.

Oh my goodness. I have not read (nor even heard of!) this cookbook. I MUST find it now. It seems divine. Thank you for sharing!

Lovely piece and very timely. I've read recently some are trying a new approach by hosting dinners with people of diverse viewpoints to build community. I'm hopeful we could try something like that in our area.

Yes! I picture one long beautiful table. I think it’s something we’re all craving, even if we can’t quite put our finger on it.

We went to friend’s house for 4th of July this past weekend - Cooked out, shot off fireworks, and it was the best time we had in a long time. First time we had done that in a long time - and vowed to do it more often - and hope to have guests over as well. Love this!!
