Okay—today is Friday, which means it's your day to see Barbie. WHAT DID YOU THINK? I had so many thoughts; do you have time for a one-hour FaceTime? Ha, just kidding (sort of).
I thought that the movie did a fascinating job of poking fun at feminism and the patriarchy, and also sympathizing with both sides. I felt seen as a woman when America Ferrara gave her monologue about how impossible it feels to BE a woman sometimes. And it made me want to hug my daughter tight and connect with her as much as possible. And the humanity behind a movie about toys was really touching and impactful. I did NOT like Ryan Gosling's hair.
Honestly, same!! I agree. I grew up on the book the Velveteen Rabbit and I loved how Barbie's journey paralleled the humanity in that story. I also appreciated how they poked good fun at both extremes and came out with a thoughtful takeaway! There was applause in the theater after America's monologue, and depressed Barbie watching 1995 Pride and Prejudice had us ROLLING haha. Such good fun and more soulful than I expected!
I’m going to have to write my own short list! I think this would be a fun thing to do every year, see how the list changes as seasons in your life change!
going to add that book to my list! On my fun list genuinely includes finding some kind of exercise that I enjoy...I'm one year post-partum after my third child and my body feels weak...but exercise is not something to which I'm enamoured. Also on the fun list: going to garden centres and discovering new coffee shops!
Laura, I was JUST having the exercise conversation with another friend this morning. I'm about to be post-partum with our third child too (6ish weeks more, but who's counting? 😅) and I have been honest with myself about the fact that I need exercise, but don't love the HIIT stuff. So, right there with you!!! Also, garden centres and coffee shops? We'd be great fun-buddies in real life!
I love this column, Dee. I just returned from a bike ride and am reminded that if you want to feel like a kid again, ride a bike. Wheeeeeee! (Not advisable for those 30-weeks pregnant, though. :-)
Yay! I agree, nothing like flying down a hill on a bike to feel the best childhood feels again! But you're right—the doctors usually frown on riding bikes in your third trimester 🤪 Alas, I may not make it onto my bike this summer, but my skis are waiting for this winter!
This summer I’ve kept a note on my phone and I write down three good/fun things that I did that day. I have done so many fun things this summer like going on walks and bike rides, seeing family, exploring new libraries, and venturing to new playgrounds (ok I suppose those are mostly fun for my kiddos). I like having it written down because I know that when I got back to school people will ask what I did this summer and I may forget or just be tempted to say “not much, we stayed home” since we didn’t travel far away. The list reminds me of the fun that was had. I don’t have a list of future fun to be had but that is a good idea.
Adding that book to my TBR list!
Yes! I also secretly want to get Mike Rucker on the lineup for The Second Cup Show 😀
I love this so much! Thanks for the reminder. Also please share your take on Barbie, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm going to see it on Friday.

Yes!!! Agree to all of the above. I also loved the scene where Barbie sits beside the old woman on the bench and tells her she’s beautiful. ❤️

Yes! I would loooooove to know what some options on your short list are!

6 weeks?! That's basically carb-loading time for me - huge congratulations! And yes wouldn't we just! Where are you based Deidre? xx
Ha! I think I'm *always* carb-loading. And thank you. I'm in Maine — where are you based?
The book looks so interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Spoiler alert: Mike Rucker, the author, will be joining us on The Second Cup show in a couple weeks! Eek!

I love this! Also, what a great way to reminisce on the fun, after the fact. It keeps the spirit of fun alive long after the event is over!
I love the power of fun and potential energy! I have never thought about making a list but now I’ll have to try it.
Besides watching Frida and Pablo "dance," I want to know what's on your list!
